Carry Your Gun
September 26, 2011Why all the debate over guns and carrying guns? Seems to me it's like any debate that when two people disagree, the conversation can lose any truth and get out of control. Thank God for our Founding Fathers who understood the reason to "keep and bear arms". This is not rocket science as some have made it. In Seminary, you learn that when interpreting Scripture, CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT is the key to understanding before applying. So what was the context when our founders wrote the 2nd Amendment?
Our well thought out 2nd Amendment states: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Our founders knew that a free people needed the right to protect them self against those who meant them harm as well as a government that could get out of control. Carrying guns in that day was also not an 'un-natural' thing either. I remember when I was growing up, my dad had a shot gun in the back window of his truck. I never asked him why he had it there, I just thought that was what you did. The way I understood, it was just a natural thing to do. It wasn't a big deal and he neither spoke about it nor made a big deal out of it to others. It was an 'open carry' if you will, just like in the day of our Founding Fathers.
It's obvious that the only people making a big deal out of the 2nd Amendment are those for gun control. But the truth of the 2nd Amendment, in its context, says that I can carry (bear) a gun as a citizen of the United States. All the 'debate' over the amendment is nothing but a distraction from what our founders meant and wrote. Carrying a gun in that day was like my dad carrying a gun in the window of his truck; no big deal. If the people want a change, say so. But don't try to make the 2nd Amendment say something it doesn't.
